2010 Soccer World Cup Facts (09 Feb - 2010)

The soccer world cup is the largest sporting event in the world and is a once off opportunity to show case South Africa as a tourist destination to the world.

If you do embrace and take part or get involved with this event, you will miss a once in a life time experience.

The whole world is still in recession and this will severely affect the visitor numbers expected and projected of up to 200000 for the 31 day event and also affect their spend.
“The Workers” throughout the world are traditionally the soccer supporters, and many of them have lost jobs or are not sure of their financial future, so numbers will be down.

Soccer supporters are visiting South Africa to watch the soccer, have fun, drink and party, and are not interested in paying for fancy large rooms with their corresponding exorbitantly high prices.

Air fares to South Africa during this period are averaging about R 20000 return ex Europe for economy class and this is exorbitant!

Internal flights are approximately R 4500/R7000 return between Cape Town and Johannesburg and even these seats are difficult to book at this time.

Approximately 80 -90% of the visitors will be MALES and will be requiring single beds for their accommodation.

Most of the accommodation bookings already made or currently being contemplated, are for larger groups, corporate business, and team supporters, who already have team specific tickets for their matches.

Most of the confirmed bookings so far have been for these specific groups and they have booked mostly into hotels at high prices or via MATCH.

With the countries team schedule now known, smaller groups and individuals are currently applying for their match tickets to follow their team or choosing an area where to base themselves, for the majority of the event.

After four  of the five ticketing sales phases for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, two-thirds of the available tickets have been sold.

14matches are currently sold out. Italy v Paraguay, as well as all games in Cape Town ,  round of 16 and quarter final in Cape Town. Portugal v Brazil and semi final in Durban. Slovenia v England in Port Elizabeth and the final in Johannesburg.

There was huge interest from South African residents, who accounted for 79% of the total applications received (958 381) in this phase. This represents an increase of 24,9% in applications from South African residents in the third sales phase when compared with the earlier ticketing stages.

Apart from the host country, the USA led the ticketing standings for the third phase with 50 217 applications, followed by the UK (41 529), Australia (15 523), Mexico (14 804), Germany (14 647) and Brazil (10 767). Increased interest was also noted in the neighbouring countries of South Africa – Botswana leading with 2 519 ticket applications followed by Mozambique (1 795) and Namibia (1 191).

The next ticketing sales phase will start on February 9 and end on April 7. During these 58 days more than 400 000 tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tickets will be available through the application process for 53 of the 64 matches.
Over the counter sales will start in mid April and ticketing centres will be opened in each host city with 2 planned for Johannesburg.

South Africans Residents will then be able to obtain tickets subject to availability, possible via Computicket or some other convenient outlet.
Currently most establishments throughout the country, have had enquiries but very few have had confirmations.

Having been influenced by newspaper reports of some prestige exclusive properties receiving astronomical daily rates for their properties, the subsequent prices quoted by hotels and many bed and breakfast and self catering establishments have been extremely high ( up to 4 times their normal high season rate!! )

  • Only some 20 % of establishments are contracted to MATCH (FIFA's accommodation agency) or other tour wholesalers, and operators.
  • Over two-thirds (67%) are charging more than their current peak season rates.
  • Just over 20% are charging 100% or higher than their current peak season rates.
  • Not surprisingly, those establishments charging normal standard rates are seeing more confirmed bookings.

Hotels and other type of establishments in Cape Town have not received many confirmed bookings at this stage.
This is possible because of the high prices being asked, the potential bad weather during the world cup period and the high costs of flights to Johannesburg and to other venue cities.

It appears that Kulula and other budget airlines are now advertising cheaper flights, due to this  lesser demand .
In some cases flights i.e. night kick off for matches , airports will be open all night and some flights to venue cities will leave around 2 am.

The weather in some venue cities in June and July (especially Cape Town) is not predictable. June and July are traditionally quiet business and holiday months with below average establishment occupancy percentages in most areas.

Only 10 % of expected visitors will be in the country for more than 21 days and only 1 % of travelling supporters will be here for the entire period.

Average stay in South Africa will be 10-14 days

Average stay per city or game will be from 2 to 7 nights

MATCH, ( the FIFA accommodation booking agency ), as per their contract with accommodation establishments, have released 441695 room nights nationally.

65022 of the room nights were for Cape Town and areas in the Western Cape

Before the 10 th april another release of rooms held by Match is possible as this avoids Match from paying penalties to establishment should Match not be able to provide guests to the establishments for their contacts signed.

The further dumping by MATCH of contracted room  will put pressure on the market, and all accommodation prices will drop.

The 64 Matches have been allocated to cities as follows,

Johannesburg, 15 games or 23.4% of all matches in the tournament
Pretoria, 6 games or 9.4 %
Nelspruit, 4 games or 6.2 %
Polokwane, 4 games or 6.2%
Rustenberg, 6 games or 9.4%

With 21 games or 32% of all matches being played in Gauteng, (in either Johannesburg or Pretoria ), this region will have highest demand for accommodation. and services.

Nelspruit, Rustenberg and Polokwane are all within 3 hours drive of both Johannesburg and Pretoria and this could place additional demand on accommodation in above major cities and surrounding areas.

Durban, 7 games or 10.9%
Bloemfontein, 6 games or 9.4 %
Port Elizabeth, 8 games or 12.5%
Cape Town, 8 games or 12,5 %

The 48 group matches are being played at the following times,
1.30 pm ( 10 games)
4 pm ( 19 games)
8.30 pm ( 19 games )
The knockout stages have the following match times
4 pm ( 6 games)
8.30pm ( 10 games)

ASSUMPTIONS
Because of the global world recession, and particularly affecting Germany and England, expensive and limited air fares and high accommodation costs, the expected visitor numbers could drop to approximately 200000, at best,(not the 450000 first projected) or only 50% of the expected spectators numbers.

There has been a world wide shock reaction to the high prices currently being offered during the world cup for accommodation of all types in South Africa.

The rand has recently strengthened this year against all major currencies, adding approximately 20 % to the costs of the visiting soccer supporter.

Accommodation in any city in South Africa that costs a soccer tourist about 50 Pounds/60 Euros/ R 600, per person per night or more, can not be classified as being cheap accommodation, in any countries currency.

Smaller Establishments offering a good standard of accommodation in the R 300 to R 500 per night per persons price range, will have the best chance of achieving an excellent occupancy and income over this period.

In most areas, there will be adequate accommodation but only those establishments with realistic pricing and some flexibility re length of stays, deposit, terms and conditions, will achieve a high occupancy rate during this period.

We suggest that local tourism establishments, attractions and operators set their rates at levels similar to those of their high-season 2010 rates for the duration of the World Cup.

Those establishments, including hotels, charging high daily rates of
R 1000/person/night and more for their lovely properties and beautiful rooms with fancy furnishings, may only receive bookings, if they receive any at all, when the cheaper “value for money accommodation establishments” are fully booked.
As the kick off date draws closer, the expensive establishments and some hotels will drop their prices to even lower than their high season rate, to ensure they get some bookings and income over this period.

Only 10 games will be played throughout the country with a kick off time at 1.30 pm, 25 games start at 4pm and 29 games kick off at only 8,30 pm.

Supporter tourists are really only interested in the success of their countries team, watching the soccer matches on TV and having a good time, which includes singing and drinking and eating!

These late kick off times, mean that during the day the supporters will have a lot of idle time on their hands, in addition to their undoubted celebrations before and after matches, for their participation in local activities, golf and sight seeing!

Tour guides, activity providers, day safaris and adventures, game reserves and every tourist attraction, including restaurants, needs to adequately market their product to ensure they get their fair share of the expected visitor spend during this major event.
