About Midland Meander

Situated in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the Midlands Meander extends over a distance of some 80km between Pietermaritzburg and Mooi River, just north of Pietermaritzburg and extends from Rietvlei and Currys Post in the east, to Dargle Valley and Fort Nottingham in the west. The Meander was started in 1983 by local artists and crafters as a tourism initiative to market their products and allow visitors to view their creative processes. Although it had a very small beginning, the Midlands Meander now consists of over a hundred stops on four different routes. There are plenty of coffee shops, tea gardens, country pubs, restaurants, wine cellars and breweries along the way, each serving up some delicious meals.

Five crafters wanted people to meet the artists in their studios rather than seeing their work in distant art galleries and shops. Today there is a network of roads that link over 60 artists and crafters residing in this beautiful part of South Africa. The route is also filled with various activities, from the thrilling Karkloof Canopy Tours, exhilirating horse riding, golf, fishing, awesome hiking, historical rock art, spas, to inspiring township tours. There are so many scenic spots to visit and things to do, yet simply enjoying the sights and sounds, not doing anything but relaxing and allowing nature to restore your soul and mind is enough reason to make time to stay here.
